What are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated summary boxes that now appear at the top of regular search results. Instead of clicking through to a website, users get a synthesized answer directly on the results page, pulled from sources Google considers authoritative. What started as Google's Search Generative Experience in beta is now a fully deployed feature.

AI Mode is a separate, more conversational experience, closer to chatting with Google than searching it. Google has called it the biggest upgrade to its Search box in over 25 years, and the two features are now merging into one experience.

The practical takeaway: search is shifting from a list of links you scroll through to an answer that gets handed to you, with a few sources cited underneath.

How much has search actually changed?

The shift is large, it is fast, and it is already changing how much traffic reaches firm websites. The numbers tell the story.

By the numbers

  • AI Overviews appeared on nearly half of all tracked queries, about 48%, after coverage grew 58% in a single year.
  • When an AI Overview appears, the top organic result's click-through rate drops sharply. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% decline, then updated it to a 58% lower click-through rate using December 2025 data.
  • People click a search result just 8% of the time when an AI summary is shown, versus 15% when it is not, roughly a 46.7% relative drop (Pew Research Center).
  • AI Mode, the conversational version of search, has crossed one billion monthly users, with queries roughly doubling every quarter.

In plain terms, more searchers are getting their answer without ever visiting a website. For firms that depend on organic traffic for leads, that is a meaningful change to plan around, not panic about.

Why traditional rankings no longer tell the whole story?

Ranking on page one and appearing in an AI Overview are now two different things. A firm that ranks well for competitive keywords may not show up in the AI summary at all. Meanwhile, a firm with only modest traditional SEO can appear consistently in AI Mode answers, simply because its content is structured in a way AI models find clear and authoritative.

This is the part that catches firms off guard. The old scoreboard, your keyword rankings, no longer reflects your real visibility. You can hold position one and still lose the click to a box above you. You can also win citations you never used to get, if your content is built for it.

The New Goal: Get Cited by AI

The objective has shifted from "rank number one" to "get cited by AI." Success is now about being credible and source-worthy inside an AI-generated answer, not just placing high on a list of links.

This emerging discipline has a name: Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO. Where traditional SEO optimizes for search crawlers, GEO optimizes for the AI systems that now sit between your content and your future client. The good news is that the work overlaps heavily with simply publishing genuinely helpful, well-organized content. AI engines reward the same clarity your clients do.

How to make your firm's content source-worthy?

To earn AI citations, your content needs to be easy for an AI model to read, trust, and lift. A few practical moves do most of the work:

  1.  Answer the question first. Put a direct, complete answer at the top of each section, then explain. AI systems tend to quote the lead sentence.
  2. Write in modular, self-contained chunks. Each section should make sense on its own, so it can be synthesized without surrounding context.
  3. Strengthen your E-E-A-T signals. Named authors with real credentials, first-hand experience, accurate facts, and clear sourcing all tell AI your content is trustworthy.
  4. Use clear structure. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists, and tables are easier for AI to parse than dense prose.
  5. Be Concrete- numbers, named methods, and dated facts get cited. Vague generalities do not.

For professional service firms, this plays to your strength. You have real expertise. The job is presenting it in a format AI can recognize and repeat. For the foundations this builds on, see our marketing best practices for professional service firms and what makes a credible, well-structured website.

Paid search is changing too

Ads are following users into the AI experience. After months of testing, Google has made ads in AI Overviews available to mobile users in the US, and is expanding them to desktop. Third-party tracking suggests ads now appear in roughly 25.5% of AI Overview results, a sharp year-over-year increase. Google is also building AI-native ad formats, including conversational and shopping ads placed directly inside AI responses.

If paid search is part of your firm's strategy, expect the inventory and formats to keep shifting. The firms that adapt their messaging to these new placements early will have an advantage while costs are still settling.

How to measure success in an AI-first search world?

Watch visibility, not just traffic. Because users increasingly get answers without clicking, your traffic numbers can dip even when your brand's presence in AI answers is growing. A drop in sessions is no longer automatic proof that your marketing is underperforming.

Start tracking whether your firm appears and gets cited in AI Overviews and AI Mode for the questions your clients ask, alongside your traditional rankings and conversions. The full reporting picture, old metrics plus new visibility, is what tells you the truth.

FAQs:

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summary boxes that appear at the top of search results and answer a query directly, using sources Google considers authoritative. Users often get their answer without clicking any website. By early 2026, AI Overviews appeared on nearly half of all tracked queries (about 48%), which makes them a major factor in how visible your firm is online.

Yes. Because AI Overviews answer many questions on the results page, fewer users click through to websites. Ahrefs found the top organic result’s click-through rate falls by 34.5% to 58% when an AI Overview appears, and Pew Research found people click a result only 8% of the time with an AI summary versus 15% without. Firms that rely on organic search for leads should plan for this shift.

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of optimizing content so AI systems will cite it in their answers, rather than only optimizing for traditional search crawlers. The goal shifts from ranking number one to being a credible, source-worthy reference inside AI-generated summaries. In practice, GEO rewards clear, well-structured, genuinely authoritative content.

Structure content so AI can read and trust it. Lead each section with a direct answer, write in self-contained chunks, use clear headings and lists, and strengthen your E-E-A-T signals with named expert authors, accurate facts, and sourcing. Being specific, using concrete numbers and named methods, makes your content far more likely to be quoted than vague, general writing.

No. Traditional SEO and AI visibility work together, not against each other. Strong fundamentals, useful content, a fast and credible website, and clear structure, support both your rankings and your chances of being cited by AI. The change is that rankings alone no longer measure your full visibility, so you add AI-citation tracking rather than abandoning SEO.
